As well as working with projects that already generate carbon credits for our customers, we’re also investing directly in projects that protect or restore nature. We expect these projects to generate carbon credits in the future, while benefiting local communities and protecting biodiversity.

Cordillera Azul, Peru
- The project supports a rich ecosystem of indigenous biodiversity, high carbon stock forests
- A multicultural population of more than 250,000 people organised in 400 communities live in the buffer zone around the Park boundaries
- By 2021, it aims to have protected 1.3 million hectares of threatened forest and safeguard 39 threatened species, supported 688 jobs of which 39% are held by women.

Southern Cardamom, Cambodia
- A REDD+ project that protects diverse tropical rainforest in the lndo Burma Biodiversity Hotspot, one of the most critical landscapes for biodiversity conservation in tropical Asia
- The project protects 497,000 hectares of tropical forest and 52 threatened species of animals
- It directly supports 20 villages around the perimeter of the project area and provides scholarships to eight additional villages, 3,600 families

Nii Kaniti, Peru
- The project works with seven indigenous communities to conserve 127,000 hectares of threatened forest in the Peruvian Amazon
- The project focuses on protecting rainforest and avoiding deforestation on community land through scaling up sustainable community forest management
- By 2024, it aims to have protected three threatened species and supported over 2,000 women and over 550 families improved livelihoods or income
- The project will run over 350 workshops to train over 7,000 community members

Tambopata National Reserve and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, Peru
- This REDD+ project aims to ensure a transition towards sustainable land use in the two national parks that are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the world, providing essential ecosystem services, such as water and carbon sequestration.
- By 2021, it aims to have protected 570,000 hectares of natural forest, 30 high conservation value species, and recovered 4,000 hectares of degraded land

Kasigau Corridor, Kenya
- This REDD+ project is home to over 50 species of large mammals, more than 20 species of bats, over 300 species of birds and important populations of IUCN Red List species
- The project protects 500,000 acres of dryland forest and has planted more than 55,000 trees
- It has completed 15 school projects benefitting over 85,000 children, and completed 10 water projects serving more than 26,000 people

Katingan Mentaya, Indonesia
- The project protects peatland habitats, preventing forest clearance which would have led to the draining of underlying peat
- The threatened land is home to several critically-endangered species, including up to 10% of the surviving Bornean orangutans, southern Bornean gibbons and proboscis monkeys
- The project protects 149,800 hectares of peat swamp forest and vital habitats for five critically endangered species
- Over 500 people are directly employed by the project

The Conservation Coast, Guatemala
- The project protects forests which are a critical migratory corridor for biodiversity, including hundreds of bird species
- It brings together hundreds of landowners to protect the forest, building up coastal defence for local communities and promoting sustainable livelihoods
- By 2021, it aims to have protected 54,000 hectares of threatened forest and reforested 1,761 hectares
- As well as, protecting 30 high conservation value species and supporting 716 jobs and 7 sustainable enterprises

Saihanba Mechanical Forestry Farm, China
- An afforestation project that aims to protect neighbouring cities from frequent sandstorms
- It also contributes to improving and protecting the local environment and biodiversity, as well as increasing local incomes
- The project covers 3,600 hectares and protects 30 high conservation value species as well as 700 plant and insect species
- It has directly created 15,000 jobs

Chinese Certified Emissions Reductions

TIST East Africa, Kenya
- A community-led tree planting project that aims to improve lives through training, information-sharing and capacity building
- The project teaches farmers how to plant trees, as well as about conservation farming and health education
- The project also provides resources and training on the construction of clean burning stoves, through which more than 54,000 people have access to improved cook stoves
- Local people receive 70% of the carbon profits

TIST India, India
- The project empowers small groups of subsistence farmers in India to combat deforestation, poverty and drought
- Carbon credit sales generate income and provide funding to address agricultural, HIV/AIDS, nutritional and fuel challenges
- The project has over 6,400 participants grouped into 1,200 small groups and over 1.7 million trees have been planted
- Local people receive 70% of the carbon profits

- A reforestation project that primarily plants teak trees which grow fast, can reach up to 40 meters and restore degraded forest
- The project will replant 20,000 hectares of degraded forest reserves
- The project provides more than 1,000 jobs and 500 farmers are supported by being able to intercrop food crops between planted trees

Jiangxi Fenglin carbon sink, China
- An afforestation project that aims to prevent soil degradation, improve biodiversity and ecology in the area, as well as providing local communities with employment opportunities and raising the average income
- The project covers 14,700 hectares and enhances forest connectivity, protecting vital habitats for endangered species
- It directly creates 740 jobs and employs local forest rangers for forest protection and fire prevention

Select Carbon, Australia
- Select Carbon partners with farmers, pastoralists and other landowners to develop carbon farming projects throughout Australia.
- They have developed and manage a portfolio of more than 70 projects covering 9 million hectares across Australia.
- Working closely with landowners, Select Carbon uses agricultural and land management practices that capture carbon in vegetation and soils or reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Their projects generate carbon credits, which are offered for sale through the Australian Government’s Emissions Reduction Fund and other markets.
- Select Carbon was acquired by Shell Australia in 2020.

Darkwoods Forest Carbon Project, Canada
- Darkwoods is a forested conservation area that was at risk of being intensively harvested before it was conserved by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Now its mature and old-growth forests will remain protected.
- The amount of carbon being sequestered and stored as a result of changing old logging practices to new conservation practices is verified regularly.
- The project creates active employment for the local community through forest management activities. It is also highly valued by the people of the surrounding communities who use it for wilderness recreation.
- It is estimated that more than 5 million tonnes of carbon are stored in Darkwoods. More carbon continues to be sequestered each year.

Glengarry, UK
- A forestry project that aims to preserve and extend Glengarry forest, one of the largest remaining areas of native Caledonian pine
- The project will plant or regenerate around 1 million trees over five years
- Developed by Forestry and Land Scotland, with support from Shell

Castilla y León, Spain
- A reforestation project that utilises technology and data to reforest degraded areas
- The project will also improve biodiversity, improve soil quality and bring new opportunities to local communities 300 hectares will be reforested
- Between April 2019 and January 2020, we planted around 300,000 trees in the project

- The 12-year partnership between Shell and Staatsbosbeheer, the independent Dutch state forestry service, enables Staatsbosbeheer to plant new trees in the forests
- More than 5 million trees will be planted and the project features education projects for children and knowledge exchange as well as other initiatives

Queensland, Australia
- Restoring 800 hectares of endangered woodland and protecting multiple endangered and threatened flora and fauna species
- Developed by Shell's QGC business
- The project is expected to generate 90,000 Australian carbon credit units over 25 years

Tŝilhqot’in Reforestation Project, Canada
- Shell and the Tŝilhqot’in National Government are jointly undertaking a reforestation project in the province of British Columbia, Canada where wildfires in recent years have significantly impacted the region, and the Tŝilhqot’in communities located there.
- Shell will provide funding, and tree planting will be managed by Central Chilcotin Rehabilitation, a Tŝilhqot’in forestry company.
- Planting will take place in areas that have not regenerated on their own, or have been slow to regenerate.
- In addition to reforestation in wildfire devastated areas, the project has potential to deliver other benefits, including Indigenous and local employment, and improvements in the local ecosystems.
- In future, the project may also lead to opportunities to generate carbon credits.

Desa'a, Ethiopia
- This forestry restoration project enables the restoration and protection of 1,000 ha of one of the oldest remaining dry Afromontane forests in Ethiopia
- In 2019 135,000 trees were planted together with local communities. The project also invests in expanding forest-friendly livelihoods such as beekeeping, poultry and small ruminants that will both protect the forest and support the resilience of local communities

Sine Saloum, Senegal
- This forestry restoration project enables the restoration of 4,775 ha of mangrove forests in Senegal between 2020 and 2022
- More than 23 million mangrove trees will be planted together with local communities. The project also improves livelihoods of local communities by boosting fish and shellfish productivity and allowing sustainable harvests that provide income for local people
- Co-developed by WeForest, a Belgium-based NGO
- Expected to generate over 1.4 million carbon credits

Schleswig Holsteinische Landesforsten - Germany
- During 2020, over 5.9 hectares of land was converted to forest from land that was previously used for agriculture. In 2021, an additional 14 hectares will be afforested
- The establishment of a mixed broadleaf forest helps increase the region’s forest cover and diversify local tree species, helping to ensure that the area is more resistant to the effects of climate change
- The cooperation serves to establishes a habitat for local fauna and flora. The local ecological niche for songbirds and insects makes the forest area particularly valuable for biodiversity
- This afforestation project, a partnership with Landforesten and Shell, promotes all ecological, social and economic forest functions.
